How would you describe yourself outside the gym?
Cam: "Outside of the gym, I am easy-going and adventurous. I enjoy surfing, spending time with my friends, taking advantage of everything Hawaii has to offer, and traveling. When my gym was closed due to the pandemic, my friends and I were able to hone our surfing skills at Waikiki’s unusually empty beaches. Now that the crowds are back and gyms have reopened, I try to fit in surfing anywhere I can. I also enjoy traveling to new places and experiencing different cultures. I’ve been to 24 of the 50 states, Japan, Taiwan, and China. My favorite destination so far is Tokyo."
How would you describe yourself inside the gym?"
Cam: "Inside the gym, I try my best to be a good role model. I’m positive. I’m a leader. I’m a hard worker. I’m serious when I need to be, but I also try to create a light-hearted environment for my teammates. In the end, I try not to lose sight of the fact that gymnastics is fun."
What are three words to best describe your personality?
Cam: "Confident, ambitious, inclusive."
What three words would your best friend use to describe you?
Cam: "Conscientious, energetic, friendly."
What is your favorite thing about competing?
Cam: "My favorite thing about competing is being able to showcase to crowds of people what I’ve been training for. At a meet, I’m able to tune out all of the noise and distractions and live in the moment. That feeling after I hit a routine is like no other."
What one thing are you most proud of yourself for?
Cam: "One thing I am most proud of myself for is getting through the difficult times in the pandemic, and sticking with gymnastics. Hawaii was shut down for almost seven months in 2020, and we had to meet with our team over zoom. We didn’t get back into the gym until October of 2020, so I was a little behind on upgrades and routines. During the 2021 season, I couldn’t go to any competitions in Hawaii due to the strict rules regarding gatherings. Regional Championships was my second competition of the season, and National Championships was my third. I am extremely proud of myself for staying mentally tough through those times and finishing strong at Nationals."
